THE BEST BURGERS IN TOWN
Join us on a virtual tour of what could be the best burgers in Singapore, especially when paired with a classic wine.
There is more to a Singapore cheeseburger than a hamburger patty topped with cheese and slapped into a bun, as everybody knows who has tried the good and the bad. The inventiveness of our chefs never ceases to amaze us except for one thing. Why do we mostly only see beer on their menus? Why can we not have two burgers and a bottle of best wine served at our table?
“I make sure I eat well without depriving myself of the things that I love,” says Goldie Hawn’s daughter, actress Kate Hudson. “A cheeseburger and fries, creamy white-truffle pasta, bowls of ice cream. Everything in moderation but I indulge at least three times a week.” We decided to indulge in one cheeseburger each a night, arriving with a bottle of wine we judged would pair best with our choice.
Burger Joint

We popped by the Burger Joint at 115 Amoy Street for two of their double jalapeno cheeseburgers and fries served in a box. We asked them to add extra bacon and they turned out real good when we snacked on them while chatting.
Our pick to accompany this burger is a bottle of nicely chilled Chardonnay Vin de France. The aromatic well-balanced flavours will work well with the jalapenos.

The following night we were at the Nickledime Drafthouse on 273 Thompson Road. It is a convivial place where you sit around long tables and eat off a plate. We enjoyed their 520 Burger with a combo of cheese, fried onions and candied bacon.
A mature red wine goes well with cheese dishes, and our Bourgogne Pinot Noir should be no exception. If it is a warm night, cool it for fifteen minutes. This will bring subtle hints of blackcurrent and blackberry to the forefront, making a great wine even more exceptional.
Omakase Burger

The third evening found us at Omakase Burger on 435 Orchard Road. Their ‘ultimate cheeseburger’ arrived topped with applewood smoked bacon, grilled mushrooms, and onions on a ‘pillowy, artisanal bun’ as their website menu describes it.
For wine on the side we recommend a bottle of Rose Bonbon, again nicely chilled but not too cold. The applewood smoked bacon will make a ‘marriage in heaven’ with the candy pink wine and delicate red fruit palate. The magic is in the blend: 50% Cinsault, 30% Syrah, and 20% Grenache.
We choose not to single out the best cheeseburger and wine pairing in Singapore to stay out of trouble. However we do agree with Jessica Chapshaw from Gray’s Anatomy that, “not being able to have a cheeseburger once in a while would be torture!” especially if not accompanied by our wine.
